Winter, Smog and Diwali: A Delhi NCR Family Guide to Protecting Elderly Parents

Every November, Delhi NCR changes. The air turns heavy, mornings get colder, festival season fills homes with guests and smoke, and many of our elderly parents quietly pull back into their rooms. At OPSAN – The Elder Care Company, this is the season our geriatric care team gets the most calls from worried families. This guide shares what we tell them.

Why winter and smog are harder on older adults

Ageing lungs, hearts and joints have less reserve. Cold weather stiffens joints and raises blood pressure, while poor air quality can aggravate asthma, COPD, heart disease and diabetes. Older adults also feel thirst and cold less sharply, so problems can build up before anyone notices.

A practical winter checklist for your parents

  • Check the air before the outing. On high-pollution days, keep walks indoors, keep windows closed in the early morning and late evening, and use a well-fitted N95-type mask if going out is unavoidable.

  • Keep warm in layers. Several thin layers, warm socks and a cap work better than one heavy garment, especially for those with low mobility.

  • Stay hydrated and eat well. Warm fluids, soups, and protein-rich meals support immunity and muscle strength. Our clinical nutritionists tailor plans for diabetes, kidney and swallowing difficulties.

  • Do not skip medicines. Keep a written, up-to-date medicine list and review it with a doctor, because winter often changes blood pressure and sugar patterns.

  • Get vaccinations discussed. Ask your doctor about influenza and pneumococcal vaccines suitable for your parent's health profile.

  • Prevent falls. Cold mornings, slippery bathroom floors and dim corridors raise the risk of falls. Add night lights, non-slip mats, grab bars and sturdy footwear.

  • Watch for the quiet signs. New breathlessness, persistent cough, confusion, unusual sleepiness, poor appetite or low mood deserve a prompt medical review.

Festival season: include them, protect them

Diwali and the wedding season are a joy, but crowds, firecracker smoke, rich food and disturbed routines can be tiring or risky for seniors. Plan a quiet corner, keep meals and medicines on schedule, and keep the elder part of the celebration rather than apart from it. Loneliness hurts health too, so a phone call, a shared meal or a visit from a caring professional makes a real difference.

Good geriatric care is not only about treating illness. It is about protecting independence, comfort and dignity, every single day.

How OPSAN helps families through the season

  • Doctor home visits: a thorough review at home for parents who find travel to a hospital tiring or risky.

  • Comprehensive geriatric assessment: a whole-person check of medicines, mobility, nutrition, memory and mood.

  • Nurses and caregivers: experienced nurses and general duty assistants, including 24/7 support when it is needed.

  • Physiotherapy and nutrition: gentle strengthening, balance work and meal plans designed around each person's conditions.

  • Emotional and family support: psychologists and counselling for elders and for the families who care for them.

  • Medical equipment on rent: oxygen concentrators, hospital beds and more, delivered when you need them.
